What is a Black Lamp?
The black lamp, also known as UV-A light or Wood’s lamp, is a light source that emits long-wave ultraviolet light and very little visible light. Its name refers to its spectral lines. This type of light is used for a variety of purposes, including scientific research and art.
Spectral lines
A black lamp’s spectrum is composed of lines that cross it at different wavelengths. These lines are mostly visible light but they also contain ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths. In the 19th century, chemists noticed that some elements emitted unique emission lines and used them to identify new compounds. But they didn’t fully understand how these lines work, or why they are present in the first place.
Fluorescent
Fluorescent black lamps are much more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs. They are also less likely to overheat, and are exceptionally bright. They work by energizing mercury atoms, which then kick their electrons up into a higher energy level. When the mercury electrons return to a lower energy state, photons in the ultraviolet range are released. A phosphor coating on the inside of the fluorescent bulb tube absorbs most of the light’s harmful ultraviolet (UV-B and UV-C) spectrum. The glass bulb also blocks most of the radiation, which helps it generate black light.
Incandescent
If you want to produce a black light, you can get a black incandescent lamp. This type of light bulb has a 100 color rendering index and 120 volt rating. Its light output is about 640 lumens. It has an E26 medium base and a CC-8 filament.
Laser
Black lamp lasers have a low light output and are therefore useful for illuminating dark areas of a room. This is due to the fact that they are made of aluminium, which is a durable and low-maintenance material. They are ideal for bathrooms, hallways, and other areas where light is needed to illuminate the room.
Infrared
An infrared black lamp is a lamp that emits infrared light. This light is invisible to humans and therefore does not contribute to light pollution. The wavelength of infrared light is extremely small (between 400 and 700nm), and thus the images it generates are black and white. By contrast, white-light has a wide spectrum and produces color during daytime.
Postmodern
The postmodern black lamp is a classic piece that can elevate any home. Made from steel, plastic, or metal, this versatile light is a stylish addition to any room. You can find antique and modern versions of this versatile lamp on sites such as 1stdibs. The postmodern black lamp is one of the most popular pieces of Mid-Century modern style.
